the split attraction model is homophobic

thats because people outside the acearo community are using it to excuse their homophobia. the split attraction model is used by the ACEARO community because often the DEGREES to which they feel sexual attraction and romantic attraction DO NOT ALWAYS LINE UP. an individual may be completely asexual, but experience romantic attraction, which is why the model was made: so people on the ASEXUAL and/or AROMANTIC spectrums could have better, more defining labels.

however the model has been co-opted by everyone else and is being wrongly used. if you’re NOT ASEXUAL AND/OR AROMANTIC, you don’t get to use the split attraction model.

the model isn’t supposed to be used to say you’re “pansexual heteroromantic”. thats not what it’s supposed to do. you use it to say, for example, that someone is gray-asexual aromantic. it isn’t used to indicate which genders you’re attracted to, but rather the degrees to which one experiences sexual and/or romantic attraction AT ALL.

IF YOU’RE NOT ACE AND/OR ARO, YOU DON’T GET TO USE IT. Stop co-opting our terminology and distorting it to excuse your homophobia.

Alexithymia

The word comes from the Greek words lexis and thumos and literally means “no words for emotions.” Alexiythymia is a clinical inability to recognize and define the emotions of one’s self and is commonly associated with BPD, among most other psychiatric disorders. Some people with alexithymia may also struggle with empathy and have trouble defining and recognizing emotions in others as well as themselves.

Signs you may struggle with alexithymia include:

  • When asked how you are feeling, you have no idea how to answer.
  • You are unsure of which words to use when describing your feelings.
  • You tend to state facts of your current situation rather than describing how it makes you feel.
  • When others are hurt are upset, you have difficulty imagining what they are going through.
  • When you are upset, you find it difficult to pinpoint what is causing it.
  • You have difficulty expressing how you feel about other people.
  • You are often unable to guess people’s needs.
  • You often depend on others to know how to react to a situation and/or how to handle it.
  • You have odd physical sensations you don’t understand and physical hypersensitivity.
Anxiety attacks aren’t always hyperventilating and rocking back and forth

Anxiety attacks can take different forms, such as:

  • Unpredictable bouts of rage or irritability
  • Nit-pickiness (obsessive behavior, which may be a part of OCD), and even a hypersensitivity to disarray, chaos, or any sort of change
  • Fast-talking, stuttering, stumbling over words
  • Not talking at all
  • Sitting rigid, staring into space, almost seeming “zoned out”

Understanding the way our or other’s anxiety works can help to decrease the stigma and help to calm a person faster and get them out of that state. These are just a few, but it gives an idea of the range in which attacks can come.
