…trying to tell us to be careful not to be anti-semitic, as if hatred for Jews is a problem right now.

rattle-and-burn

I see a lot of social justice posts on tumblr and very, very few of them are addressing the growing worldwide anti-semitism problem. In not reporting it on the news, not caring about it like we do other social issues, we are being complacent. That didn’t work out so well last time, how about no.

Look at the fucking notes on this.

It’s like no one even fucking cares!

as some of you may know, nicki minaj recently released a lyric video for her single “only” featuring drake, lil wayne, and chris brown (which can be found here). upon watching this video, it becomes disturbingly obvious that the imagery is uncannily reminiscent of the nazi regime, especially during the holocaust. on the left are the images from nicki’s video, and on the right are actual images from/relating to the nazism during the holocaust.

although there has been some buzz about this video, it is not nearly enough. i have seen various people making excuses, saying that she was only trying to portray a dictatorship — understandable, but the imagery used was certainly not appropriate or necessary. there is a way to portray power and dictatorship without using the holocaust. it is extremely problematic and offensive, no matter which way you look at it. a young money symbol that is blatantly supposed to look like a swastika? uniforms that resemble those of the SS (nazi police)? these images are completely disgusting and certainly not appropriate for nicki (or drake, lil wayne, and chris brown) to use.

in no way, shape, or form am i hating on nicki; i’ve been a fan of hers for awhile, but that doesn’t mean her problematic behavior should be excused. don’t let this go without an apology. nicki needs to be aware of the fact that this video is wrong and has already offended a large amount of people. tweet her, comment on the video, let her know that she made a mistake. there is no need to bash her, but there is a need to be a critical fan.

the video is absolutely disgusting. so disappointing

Please call it what it is: antisemitism

chirikli

IT IS NOT JUST ANTISEMITISM HOW MANY FUCKING TIMES DO RROMANI PEOPLE HAVE TO SAY THIS? 2 million Rromani people died in the holocaust, along with millions of disabled folks, LGBTQIA folks, and other people of color. I am so sick of seeing people on my dash erasing my family and millions of other people who were murdered by Nazis. And this isn’t just in regards to this video; this happens time and time again, even in official government discussions of the holocaust. My people are not some footnote.

a list of don'ts for goyim in regard to jews and jewishness
no-good-nik

  • do not ever ever compare jews or a jewish person to vermin. i don’t care what the context is. it is an incredibly historically loaded thing
  • do not under any circumstances alter our magen david or call it something dirty or awful. it is a symbol of all jews, and if you call it something like “satanic”, you are hurting all jews
  • do not insert israel or palestine in conversations about jewishness or jews when it has nothing to do with either subject
  • do not think knowing a jew gives you authority on anything. having a jewish SO or friend gives you authority on nothing
  • do not think that your country does not have an antisemitism problem. few countries have their hands clean.
  • do not think that antisemitism is isolated to one region or one people
  • do not think that antisemitism today is harmless or dead or a “political tool”
  • do not ever source nazi/neonazi material for any of your social justice work. i don’t care how “spot on they are for this one issue”, if you do that, you are trash and your social activism is trash too.
  • do not celebrate our holidays because you think it would be a fun thing to do. would you think it’s fun or interesting to walk into a synagogue surrounded by cops on yom kippur, weak from fasting, knowing that your chances of experiencing violence on this holy day have increased a hundredfold because of your jewishness?
  • do not ever speak over a jew on jewish identity.
  • do not erase or ignore our suffering
  • do not call our genocide a white people’s genocide
  • do not use our genocide against us. genocide is never a lesson for the victim
  • do not forget the various genocides and suffering of jews outside of europe and the holocaust.
  • do not forget that we are as subject to various -isms as gentiles. your social activism is not intersectional if you forget jews.
  • do not forget the jewish history of various social movements
  • do not forget that we are a varied people—jews are never a monolith.

i dont think there is a single country that has its hands clean tbh

"Mother Gothel’s design makes me uncomfortable. Her dark, thick, curly hair, her sharp nose, and the way her features are generally perceived as more "ethnic" in comparison to all the other human characters in Tangled—it all reminds me of an archetype for Jewish women"

livianalemay

Interesting fact: The stereotypical witch found in fairy tales was usually portrayed as the stereotypical Jew in order to spread anti Semitic propaganda.

This is also where we get the “greedy Jew” stereotype, as goblins, hobgoblins, gnomes and dwarves were also portrayed as the harmful Jewish archetype.

In the middle ages, it was a sin for a Christian to hoard or handle large amounts of money, which left the profitable banking industry open to Jews. It’s ridiculous that Christians created the stereotype to avoid a sin, and this stereotype is still portrayed and spread today

thegeekyblonde

I’VE BEEN THINKING ABOUT THIS FOR MONTHS especially since if mother gothel looks like a nazi propaganda-esque jewish woman, and she steals the most aryan-looking baby in the kingdom to use its essence in a ceremony…

like does that smell like blood libel or am i paranoid

glegrumbles, is this pretty much the summary of whatever sources you were going to pull out on the matter of stereotypical witch appearances being derived from anti-Semitic stereotypes?

Sort of. It touches a bit on some of it, but it goes preeeeetty damn deep. And it’s very frustrating to try to track down scholarly resources on it because it does tend to get shoved under the rug. I was having a conversation with some friends and thetwistedrope about it, trying to gather up what I can find.

But there’s a lot of folkloric racism and Othering. In fairy tales, in folklore about supernatural things and witches. Jewish people were heavily associated with magic, but there was a lot of… well, “let’s take their neat stuff but also we still don’t like these people and will oppress them” stuff that happened. (Look at all the historical Western Tradition magic that draws on Jewish ideas and culture, but continued to have no problem shitting on Jewish people and culture as a whole.) A lot of people don’t know the coded things they’re looking at, just like they miss references to other racist things in society and popular culture.

And being blissfully ignorant and perpetuating this stuff, I shouldn’t even have to say, is not in any way, shape, or form a good or ok thing. Most especially because anti-semitism is visibly on the rise. It’s not a blast from the old-timey past that is interesting but not relevant anymore. It’s still very much relevant today, not just in Europe but all over the place, including in the USA and Canada.

And one thing I’ve noticed, since starting to track this: it doesn’t get talked about. People who reblog stuff about anti-semitism and anti-semitic crimes tend to be… pretty much only Jewish community members, and other SJ blogs ignore it. Posting gets you crickets. (And I’m guilty of this as well, not reblogging some of the stuff that goes past on my dash. This is something I need to change.)

So… yes. This is an issue I am very much paying attention to.

hi, i'm sorry if this has been asked but in your powerpoint you said that the tumblr sj community is guilty of antisemitism. what kind of things has it done? also, i love your blog!

I’ll take this one since I’m the blog’s resident Jew.  Oy vey, where do I start…

  • SJ community loves to police Jewish identity and silence actual Jews when they talk about their own identities.  This usually happens in context of either “Are Jews White?” or “Jewishness is just a religion” conversations.  In reality, Jews are an ethnoreligious group that ethnically originated in the middle east, and while some ethnic Jews have light skin, it’s actually due to centuries of forced assimilation in European and Slavic countries through rape, which is a big reason why Jewishness is matrilineal.  Furthermore, there exist Jews who do not look white at all.  There are black, brown, and asian Jews who are all ethnically Jewish, and these conversations erase them.
  • “Jewish privilege”.  Fact: It’s not a thing.  It’s actually a very common anti-semitic trope that says that Jews run everything so they are not oppressed.  Jews are oppressed, and face anti-semitic violence.
  • “Anti-semitism is not just about Jews, there are other semitic people.” While yea, there are other semitic people, the term “anti-semitism” was created by Germans in the 19th century to refer specifically to the hatred of Jews because it sounded more scientific.
  • Blaming anti-semitic violence in Europe on the actions of Israel.  I see this literally every single day on this site, and it’s very upsetting.  Jews that live in the diaspora are not responsible for Israel’s actions, and especially should not be suffering at the hands of white people in Europe under the guise of anti-zionism.
  • Finally, and this is a big pet peeve of mine.  The only people I ever see reblogging posts about anti-semitism are other Jews.  Even a lot of my non-Jewish followers will reblog posts about racism, sexism, homophobia, etc. but ignore posts about anti-semitism, and that as a Jew makes me feel unsafe.

That’s enough for now.  If you’re interested in learning more about Jewish identity and anti-semitism, you are welcome to check out my personal blog: yochevedke.  I discuss that stuff a lot.

gendest

because a lot of people dont seem to get this:

  • golems are from jewish folklore. dont treat them like a generic fantasy creature, thats appropriative
  • kabbalah is a specifically jewish religious tradition. dont practice it if youre not jewish and dont use kabbalah symbolism as generic occult stuff, thats appropriative
  • for the record if it has hebrew on it and it doesnt have anything to do with judaism its probably appropriative
  • dont wear a magen david if youre not jewish, its used as a symbol for judaism so wearing it if youre a gentile is appropriative
  • while im at it heres a rundown of some terms you should know
  • goy: hebrew and yiddish for non-jewish person, it literally translates as “nation.” the plural form is goyim. goy is not a slur.
  • gentile: english for non-jewish person
  • anti-semitism: you probably know what this means but i just want to point out that the word anti-semitism was NOT coined by jews but by a german anti-semite who wanted a more scientific-sounding alternative to “judenhass,” which literally translates to “jew-hatred” so please shut up about how arabs are also semites. we know.
  • if you’re not jewish you should also avoid using the word “jew” since many jewish people are uncomfortable with it (though i personally am fine with it). use “jewish person” instead if youre a gentile

please reblog this if you’re not jewish, i almost never see gentiles acknowledging cultural appropriation of judaism and anti-semitism on tumblr, even among people who otherwise pay close attention to such issues

Do not blame the Jews for what the Zionists are doing in Palestine.
I’ve seen way too many posts about “Kill/destroy all the yahud; All the Jews fault!”

No, it isn’t.
It is Zionists.

Judaism ≠ Zionism.
The same way Islam ≠ Al-Qaeda.
The same way Christianity ≠ Westboro Baptist Church.
