Today we learned that gravity is a fine musician. A team of Japanese filmmakers constructed an incredibly long wooden xylophone along a steady slope in the middle of a beautiful forest in Kyushu in southern Japan. Once the awesome instrument was built and carefully tuned a wooden ball was released at the very top. As the ball rolls down the xylophone it strikes each wooden bar once, producing a single note, performing Bach’s “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring“ accompanied by the gentle sounds of a peaceful forest:

Click here for an orchestral performance of the same piece.

To learn more about how this clever forest xylophone was made watch this behind-the-scenes video:

Humphrey and Perry used to do this sometimes. You can tell when it’s an “I am happier and therefore better than you” flop when they look each other in the eye and then throw themselves really, really hard on the ground. When they were getting along they would softly flop near one another with the requisite “I am inspecting the floor to see if it’s a good flopping place” sniffing and pushing. When they were mad at each other it would be like DIVING FLOP DIRECTLY IN YOUR LINE OF SIGHT YOU SUCK. They had a complicated relationship.

First Snakes Had Tiny Ankles and Toes

The original snake ancestor was a nocturnal, stealth-hunting predator that had tiny hindlimbs with ankles and toes, according to research published in the open access journal BMC Evolutionary Biology.

Their results suggest that snakes originated on land, rather than in water, during the middle Early Cretaceous period (around 128.5 million years ago), and most likely came from the ancient supercontinent of Laurasia. This period coincides with the rapid appearance of many species of mammals and birds on Earth.  Read more at ScienceDaily.com…

Hi! I just wanted to say about the turtle gif that was posted there: this is actually really healthy behaviour. Both tortoises and turtles exhibit this behaviour. It’s the equivalent of a cow scratching their bum up against a fence post. They do this against roughage to get shedded skin off their back end that they can’t get off as easily. The turtle feels something moving against their bottom and begins this “dance” to get an itch so to speak. I’m training to become a vet nurse, and we’ve even used toothbrushes to allow both turtles and tortoises to do this behaviour. The turtle isn’t stressed :) they’re actually really really happy!

This turtle looks like he’s trying to swim, or to move away but the floor is too slippery. Either way I am pretty sure this is a stressed out turtle, possibly because the turtle is having a direct stream of water poured onto his shell, which is actually part of it’s skeleton. It’s also suspect that the turtle is in the shower in the first place, it’s unnecessarily stressful to handle turtles, and they should have a filter in place to keep the water as clean as possible so they don’t need washing. Both stress and a dirty tank can lead to illness in turtles.

This is most definitely Not Actually Cute.

It has been brought to my attention that this actually a turtle trying to shed. Having always kept my turtles in tanks with pumps and adequate rocks, caves and plants to shed against I have never had a turtle have a shedding problem. As evidence by the fact that you as a veterinary nurse are trained to do this, this turtle has probably had a shedding problem causing them to be itchy. There is still no evidence that an itchy turtle having it’s itch scratched is a “happy” turtle, and rather that the setup and husbandry has probably been inadequate for the turtle to shed normally to require assistance. And handling unnecessarily is still a big no no for turtles as the stress can still make them ill.

If it were a gif of them exhibiting this behavior in their tank naturally there wouldn’t be a problem as it wouldn’t be indicative of anything.

TL:DR Do not handle you turtles unnecessarily as it’s stressful for them and they aren’t a handleable pet, they should be able to shed on their own given good husbandry.

Therefore it’s still Not Actually Cute

The Random Darknet Shopper, an automated online shopping bot with a budget of $100 a week in Bitcoin, is programmed to do a very specific task: go to one particular marketplace on the Deep Web and make one random purchase a week with the provided allowance. The purchases have all been compiled for an art show in Zurich, Switzerland titled The Darknet: From Memes to Onionland, which runs through January 11.

The concept would be all gravy if not for one thing: the programmers came home one day to find a shipment of 10 ecstasy pills, followed by an apparently very legit falsified Hungarian passport– developments which have left some observers of the bot’s blog a little uneasy.

If this bot was shipping to the U.S., asks Forbes contributor and University of Washington law professor contributor Ryan Calo, who would be legally responsible for purchasing the goodies? The coders? Or the bot itself?
