I feel like this is a great example of racism in the media. Both of these are reporting on the same event, but TMZ portrays Nicki as the “angry black woman”. First the choose the picture that makes Nicki look like she’s attacking, while Buzzfeed used a picture taken seconds before but portrays Nicki as much less aggressive. Then TMZ goes on to use buzzwords like “explodes” and then includes “You Bitch” in the headline, all to make Miley seem like the victim and to demonize Nicki. It’s the little things like this that change the story and leaves Nicki as the villain and lets Miley escape scandal unscathed. The same thing happened with Nicki and Taylor’s made-up “feud”.

the chocolate bird meme actually started in 2011, technically. a gif of a cockatoo in a chocolate foundation began circulating…
….and for some reason struck people as “relatable content.” i remember seeing it as early as april 2011. that post ended up getting hundreds of thousands of notes (which was a HUGE deal at the time since the site’s user base was much smaller. think the equivalent of getting like 1.5 million notes now.)
then, shockingly, someone decided to write an essay about why the gif wasn’t funny at all, but rather problematic and abusive. i believe this was written in december 2011/january 2012.
what this person and a shit ton of others DIDN’T know (because no one fucking googles anything) is that it was a CGI bird. the entire scene was fake. it was from fucking JACK AND JILL, aka the movie widely regarded as the WORST ADAM SANDLER MOVIE OF ALL TIME–let me say that again bc it’s saying a lot: the worst ADAM SANDLER movie OF ALL TIME.
by janurary/february 2012, the gif had started a site-wide debate about whether or not it was a depiction of animal abuse. people were literally unfollowing other people based on whether they supported/condemned the gif. no matter what opinion you voiced, you were pretty much guaranteed to get flack or anon hate, tbh.
one person defending the gif replied to the OP of the post that condemned it, and the OP’s response is what really launched The Meme.
the OP’s reply, beginning with “listen here cum-slut….” became a copy pasta. at first, people would just paste the entire unedited rant into any situation where injury or insult was perceived. then people started adding it as a caption to unrelated or tangentially related posts (anything to do with birds or people eating chocolate were frequent targets)
the one i remember the most vividly was the version that someone attached to a gif of augustus gloop in the chocolate river from the 2005 charlie and the cholate factory where any mention of birds was replaced with “fat kid” (2011/2012 tumblr was v problematic and The Discourse had not yet taken root)
eventually the entire rant just got shortened to “listen here cum-slut” because the meme was so pervasive that pretty much everyone who had a tumblr at the time had memorized the rest of the post or some variant of it. just quoting the opening line implied the rest of the copy pasta (very similar to “what the fuck did you just fucking say about me you little bitch?”)
so that’s how a cgi gif of a bird in a chocolate fountain caused a website-wide war. the lesson here is that tumblr has and always will be a garbage site. started at the bottom and yeah no we’re still at the bottom nothing has changed get used 2 it kids. or leave and save yourselves. it’s obviously 2 late 4 me
but honestly it makes me really uncomfortable how so many white people tag other white peoples selfies with things such as “space child” “angel fairy princess uwu” “cactus love plant!!” but when it comes to PoC (especially brown and black people) it’s always tagged with “SLAY ME” “sTEP ON MY PASTY FACE” “DRAG ME PUNCH ME IN THE ASS SLAAAAAY YAAAAAS BITCH WERK”…… do u not think we are tired as fuck of being associated with violence or…

i used to participate in the ‘cultural costume day’ that would happen annually and i would wear a really nice red qi pao to school and i’d walk in thru the school doors beaming until someone would come up 2 me, look me up and down and say loudly, ‘is this how u dress at home. u look funny’
i would look around and get confused. why did this person, who i barely even knew, decide 2 come up to me and tell me that my cultural clothes were weird on me when there were so many white ppl and ppl who were not ethnically chinese wearing the same clothes ? the comments continued n escalated and i honestly lost count of the squinted eyes and ‘ching chongs’ that i saw n heard
it scared me and i was ashamed of my own culture. when the same day came again the next year, i went to school in uniform and ppl asked me ‘aren’t u chinese ? obv not. look at us. we’re so chinese right now’. i heard ppl go up to their friends and tell them that their ‘chinese dress’ looked great on them. ‘where did u get it ?’ ‘chinatown, duh’. these white ppl were being celebrated 4 wearing MY cultural clothing. i realised then that it was ok when they were wearing it, bcus it was quirky n fun; but when i wore it i was being excessively enthusiastic abt my own culture n should ‘tone it down’ a little bit. and when i didn’t participate i was shamed for ‘not being chinese enough’

last yr, when a poc classmate of mine decided to make a video of him ‘imitating chinese ppl’, i was curious as to how he would present chinese ppl. so i watched the video! and i was not surprised to find that the entire video was 100% offensive
so i wrote to him, publicly, on his facebook wall, and the first msg he sent me (within 10 seconds of me posting it) was ‘are you trying to ruin my life :(’

Yes, Black men in majority white spaces do. Interested in everything around them? Eat any food put in front of them? Athletic and strong?
Now think of a girl in the same situation. She walks on her toes- how cute she must be imitating mommy’s high heels, or the ballerina in her favorite movie she watches all day every day without end. She’s quiet. “Wow, so fortunate your little girl is so well behaved, not a brat like my daughter!” She refuses to eat anything but Kix cereal and saltines? She’s just being fussy. Girls are always fussy, didn’t you know? She can’t do math? It’s okay. Girls are bad at math. Right? She can’t keep a grip on the monkeybars but obviously it’s just because girls aren’t good at sports.
My point being, parents not noticing a girl’s Autism is deeply rooted in sexism. And it’s bullshit. Even today my mom acts like there’s “no way” I could be autistic even though my brother (diagnosed at 9yrs when I was 5) and I presented THE EXACT SAME SYMPTOMS!!! FOR OUR ENTIRE CHILDHOOD!!! AND WE STILL DO!!!! My brother got every bit of aid available at the time, IEPs in school, special arrangements at home for his sensory difficulties. You know what I got? I got told to stop being a picky little bitch. To suck it up. Because I’m a girl.
