That was a stupid argument for transtamlen to make. Waifu and husbando are actual Japanese words, not Engrish. They appropriated the English word wife and husband into their native language, ワイフ and ハズバンド. So what we have here is cultural appropriation… revenge?

Alrighty, person above is correct, but can a linguistics major throw in her two cents about the words ワイフ and ハズバンド?
The traditional old words for wife have a negative connotation to them. Adopting the western word for wife is more commonplace now, as it doesn’t have the “property” aspect to it as much. It is less formal and more respectful way.
Husband’s westernization is to also make it less formal and a more friendly term.

Ok this whole conversation is ridiculous and you’re all missing the point. Let me ask you something. Why do you have to use Japanese words? Why can’t you just use the English ones? Is there a particular reason for why you, a non-Japanese person, should use “waifu” instead of “wife”? 

No. There is no reason, besides the fact that a bunch of weaboos want to use ~Japanese~ words to make themselves more “cool” and a part of the ~Japanese~ culture and shit. That’s insulting and harmful in the long run because all it does is encourage people to butcher the Japanese language and think of it as this cutesy thing where you can just spout out random words or phrases even when it’s completely inappropriate. And sometimes this plays a role in the fetishization of East Asian women. Example: when I went to an anime convention in the US last year I saw a Korean-American girl in cosplay having to put up with gross white weaboo dudes who were trying to pose with their arms around her while saying shit like “You’re totally my waifu” and “Could you do something cute, like kawaiiiiii?” And the whole time, she was just standing there awkwardly laughing. I had to go in and pretend she was my sister so that she could escape. 

Not to mention the fact that “ワイフ" and "ハズバンド” are not words that are used often in conversation, except by male otakus and, on a smaller scale, female otakus/fujoshis. Besides that they are either used in relation to English Titles and Names, or during very casual light-hearted joking or as slang. However, ワイフ is commonly used on porn sites, ecchi/hentai manga, and erotic photobooks. So actually I would argue that while ワイフ might lack the traditional negative connotations of 奥さん, it has it’s own negative connotations framing women as childish, infantile, and submissive. Again that’s a theme that runs in the fetishization of East Asian Women. 

tl;dr There is really no good reason for why you should use “waifu” or “husbando” and I’m going to side eye you if you use it extensively, especially if you’re a non-Asian person because I’ve seen way too many of you pawing East Asian girls and boys in fits of yellow fever so fuck off.
