The term “PoC” is not meant to encompass all brown and black individuals of the world. Its not a general title for every non-white person; that was never its intention. Its a term that derives within western, specifically US context among like-minded racialized individuals who come under direct scrutiny and intimately grapple with the calamities of the white gaze everyday, who build solidarity amongst each other to dismantle all forms of racial oppression and prejudice, both within their communities and that perpetuated against them. Taking this word and reconfiguring it out of its intention to talk about political and social phenomenons that exist outside of white dominated areas is really counterproductive. Africans and Asians living in their respective regions are not “PoC”.
I think I’ve been guilty of that last action before, too, and this is a really good explanation of why that isn’t really useful.
