Inquisitor WARDEN as a Companion ver 2.0 (part two)

so i finished da:i but i’m still in warden mode so i’m revisiting this meme, once more with feeling (100% more da:o/da2 references)

Name: Yun (surname dropped) / dalish elf / warrior (two-handed) / reaver

Varric’s Nickname for them: stabby

Default Tarot Card: ace of swords

How they are recruited:

the inquisitor and party are wandering the exalted plains when a large crow flies at and nearly tackles the inquisitor in the face before settling on their shoulder, repeatedly pecking and cawing at them, then flying a short distance away and coming back. the inquisitor follows the crow to a spot a little bit away from a fade rift, where a hooded elven warrior observes from afar. the elf identifies them as the inquisition right away, introduces themself as yun, and asks them for help in the fight, saying they’d never killed a demon before and would like to try, with the inquisitor’s help. if the inquisitor asks how they knew they were with the inquisition, yun will grin and say, “they don’t only teach you how to be wary of humans in dalish clans, you know.”

the inquisitor can comment on how strange their request is which will result in yun pointing out that they know there is a dalish clan in these plains somewhere, and that it should be obvious why they would make such a request, pointing at their vallaslin.

if the request is refused, yun will bid the inquisitor farewell and leave, leaving the party to close the rift without them.

after the fight, dialogue will reveal that yun is not part of the clan currently in the plains, cheerfully informing the inquisitor that they aren’t affiliated with any clan at all, and they’ve been wandering the ferelden-orlais border for years now, scouting with their crow (which they seem to be able to communicate with), so they’re familiar with the various little settlements and dalish clans and the politics between them in the area. the inquisitor can then either recruit them or send them on their way.

if recruited, yun will joke that the inquisition must be really desperate if they’re asking a clan-less dalish for help, but will accept, saying that they haven’t been a part of anything in a long time.

if not recruited, the inquisitor will not meet yun again, but will occasionally see a large crow in the skies near them in their travels.

Where they are in Skyhold: sitting on the roof of the watchtower and eating, will sometimes pace and lean over the wall overlooking skyhold grounds, or on the wall looking at the mountains. their crow can be found next to them most of the time, and the inquisitor can interact with it, too.

Things they Approve of: pro-elf decisions/dialogue, distrust/dislike of the chantry, ally with mages/disband the templars, gaspard/briala rule, an elf drinks from the well (excepting themself), fighting dragons

Things they Disapprove of: letting clan lavellan die, disapprove of their past, putting down dalish culture/religion, letting non-elves drink from the well

Mages, Templars, Other? although they approve if the inquisitor is pro-mage, the only side they will take is any one without the templar order on it. yun joins the inquisition first for a sense of belonging, then to influence it as a tool for change. to yun, the inquisitor is simply another person in power to keep an eye on – though if approval is high, it isn’t an altogether unpleasant task.

Other Companions:

  • they and dorian argue a lot about the imperium (yun accuses him of only wanting to improve his country’s outward image and the lives of the upper classes, and not caring about everyone else, especially the slaves/slavery); other than that they are generally agreeable and joke around with each other
  • they and sera have a relationship based solely on who can prank solas the most/hardest
  • acts brattier around solas but respects him when it comes down to it. will still be casually rude to him/treat him like an unwanted uncle. particularly explosive about his opinions on the dalish, will defer to him about demons/spirits/the fade
  • mutual respect for the iron bull on the battlefield/in combat, and their banter will mostly consist of that, except for the ones about launching stuffed nugs with trebuchets
  • nervous and intimidated by vivienne — will argue with her about the circle of magi, but doesnt dislike her
  • generally fond of cassandra but gets into frequent discussions/arguments about religion with her
  • protective of cole but unsure of how to talk to him
  • frequently forgets blackwall exists.

doesn’t ever actually have a close relationship with anyone in the inquisitor’s inner circle if not in a relationship with the inquisitor. they generally keep everyone at a distance.

Romanceable? in terms of being in some kind of relationship: yes, but it is not a romantic one (quasiplatonic/qp). yun can be flirted with, and if flirted with enough times, a conversation will trigger in which yun will ask whether the inquisitor’s feelings for them are romantic or otherwise (“i may be dense about these things, but you do lay it on kind of thick.”), with three options:

a) yes, it is romantic [leads to more options]
b) no, i was just having fun [the romance will end]
c) no, but i still care for you a lot. [relationship begins]

option a will lead to yun explaining that they are not comfortable with being in a romantic relationship and the inquisitor will have the option to ask if they want to explain why (leads to options b and c), or simply end the conversation/romance.

relationship cutscenes will mostly consist of yun being intimate (non-sexually) with the inquisitor, and these will be the only times the inquisitor learns anything about their past (aside from their companion quest). can be sexual if the inquisitor asks.

after the relationship starts, yun will be more openly flirtatious and teasing in public, but quieter in private.

Small side mission: Crow Training!

yun will ask the inquisitor for help with training their crow to retrieve items over long distances; but this is only practice, so they want to make it a game of sorts (“… so that’s where you come in!”)

as the inquisitor travels, the crow will appear randomly in different locations for a total of 11 times (one item per location); each time, the inquisitor is to retrieve from the crow either:

  • a random wooden figurine
  • an ornate, decorative dagger

Companion quest:

when entering the storm coast with yun in the party, a lone elf will appear on the coast near where iron bull is recruited, staring at the horizon across the sea. if talked to, a cutscene will trigger, and it’s revealed that the elf was a hunter from clan sabrae, most recently camped in the free marches near kirkwall, until their keeper was killed and the clan disbanded. (if varric is in the party, he will mention that he recognized the elf from somewhere before) if the clan was killed in da2, he will say that he and a handful of other hunters were away when it occurred.

then he will recognize yun and start accusing them of supporting blood magic/demons, and that even if they had self-exiled, they may as well have orchestrated the death of the keeper/clan themself by siding with a blood mage. the inquisitor can then choose from 2 options: a) defend yun [slight approval], b) dismiss him altogether [disapproval] (the elf will attack; leads to a minor boss fight). an investigation point will also appear and the inquisitor can ask what happened to the clan and yun.

back at skyhold, yun will explain that they were part of clan sabrae until about ten years ago (during the year that passes between the prologue and act 1 of da2) when yun decided to go back to ferelden after the blight ended. they will explain about merrill and tamlen and the mirror (the events that occur in the mahariel origin still took place, except yun was not with tamlen when it happened), and they and merrill had a disagreement about what to do about finding tamlen again. merrill wanted to fix the mirror; yun wanted to go back to the ruin for clues. eventually they decided to do both, yun reluctantly agreeing with merrill’s plan to cleanse the mirror (although they hadn’t known about the blood magic then), and exchange information via messenger bird.

sometime along the way, however, all communications from merrill suddenly stopped, and all of yun’s messages to her were not being replied to. eventually, they went to the arlathvhen in halamshiral and learned of the clan’s status, and of what happened to merrill, including the rumors about her being a blood mage, (confirmed by the elf they met on the storm coast). they didn’t know where merrill had gone after that, so they wandered orlais between the emerald graves, the exalted plains, and halamshiral until they met with the inquisition in the plains. yun will also admit that they are still hoping to find merrill, at least to ask for her side of the story, because they still consider her a dear friend, and dont believe that she would turn to blood magic with malicious intent. after that, the inquisitor has two options:

option 1

support yun’s want to find merrill again, unlocking a war table operation to use inquisition forces to do that, eventually leading to a short chain of operations in which yun and merrill share correspondences. [yun greatly approves]

option 2

disapprove of yun being friends with a blood mage, which yun will greatly disapprove of, and depending on how aggressive the inquisitor is, will lead to either telling yun to leave the inquisition, or to them leaving the inquisition themself.
