I do think that it’s pretty interesting how this coronavirus pandemic has showcased how manufactured inaccessibility is.

When I was too sick to attend high school, I was told that any distance learning accommodations were impossible and I was forced to drop out. Now, my same high school has switched to online courses.

When I asked my college’s disability office if they could offer any accommodations for days I was unable to make it to class due to my illness, I was told that it was not possible, and that if I missed more than the allotted amount of days I would be automatically failed. Now, my college is offering numerous online accommodations and any illness related absences are fully excused.

When I spoke with my college about the physical problems that the increased burden of work study was causing me, they didn’t care, and said I could either work 20 hours a week or not get the money. Now, they’re funding work study for students who are either ill or who are not physically be on campus.

It almost seems like full accessibility isn’t actually impossible, and institutions just don’t want to make the effort to include disabled individuals.

Somehow, when abled people need accommodations, they’re readily available.

I thought I had seen the worst this US election cycle could provide but now american leftists on twitter are defending a ‘critical support’ for trump and the gop if they swerve “left” with their economic policies due to covid-19 and honestly. I am not even surprised anymore. falling for the oldest trick in the book of populist fascism, cringe.

Wonderful to see “a leftie” cool with toned down racism who feels she has no choice but to vote for fascists.

fascism gains a foothold by essentially offering a trade; we will make your life better, at the expense of people who arent like you. Thats why fascism rises in times of crisis. If things are good and they have nothing to offer you, it’s easy to say no. If things are difficult and uncertain, it’s a lot more difficult. It’s a lot more appealing to say, well, they arent that bad, or turn a blind eye, or start to see things their way. Maybe things wouldve been better if we’d closed our borders a long time ago, maybe I would have a job now if it wasnt for those immigrants.

That’s the bargain fascism offers. the nazis introduced public works projects and offered some social welfare programs to help those they deemed worthy. Life for some germans did improve, at the expense of millions and millions and millions of jewish people, and others they considered inferior. If youre not someone who’s directly targeted by fascism, that might seem tempting, it might even seem like the lesser evil, but in times of crisis it’s more important than ever to keep the needs of those around you in mind alongside your own, and listen to those who are targeted by fascists. Theres every possibility theyll come for you someday too, or maybe they wont, but they will come for someone, and you have no right to make that exchange. And remember that ultimately, everyone suffers under fascism, its promise is an empty one, it will fall apart and youll be left in the ashes trying to figure out how to live with yourself.

Actual orthodox jews in hospitals:
*will do pretty much anything to save a life*
let me check with my rabbi who will check with serious medical professionals
*values life above all*
*values medical advice and opinions*
*believes in scientific advances and medicine*

orthodox jews in hospital tv shows:
uh…..i think god would want me to die rather then take your medicine bc it once touched a pig and that’s the extent of my religion why don’t you get a random rabbi to come bless me

mothposting

I hope it’s ok to add to this post bc I want to explain further, we have a principle called pikuach nefesh that basically means preserving life overrides almost any other commandment. It’s the same reason ill and pregnant people don’t fast on Yom Kippur. I don’t know much about specific halachic debates vis-a-vis various medical treatments but there is NO concept of enduring unnecessary suffering because it’s “what God wants”, i think that’s an exclusively christian way of thinking.

also, as @/fatnutritionist pointed out on twitter today, if you are not physically dependent on alcohol, please leave some alcohol on store shelves for those who are. alcohol withdrawal causes fever and seizures, which can be fatal. lots of people going into withdrawal during a pandemic can also overwhelm the healthcare system. be mindful of your addicted neighbors.

i really didn’t think i could be anymore disappointed in electoralism but here i am in the chicago suburbs desperately trying to not watch the news

tinyrats

yesterday night chicago news cycles aired fake results proclaiming biden the winner of our primaries, citing them as graphic tests. our election board begged our billionaire democrat governor to postpone elections and he fucking refused, claiming that judges and voters would be provided with proper sanitation supplies and come today, most of our polling locations SWITCHED or outright CLOSED and judges had to drop out because they were at risk during a fucking pandemic

leftover volunteers were majority elders who arrived at polling sites lacking any hand sanitizer or even basic VOTING SUPPLIES. there’s a location where volunteer judges arrived, were NOT provided with a fucking blue box for literal hours, and had to redirect voters to a polling site across town. a polling site in barrington had all of its fucking judges drop out–as they SHOULD HAVE CUZ WE’RE IN A FUCKING PANDEMIC. bernie suggested postponing elections and biden’s twitter accounts encouraged people to put themselves at risk lmfao

my brother and i have been calling jp pritzker on all three of his public phone numbers all fucking day and i haven’t even been able to leave a voicemail asking about extending mail ballot deadlines. you’d think a billionaire could afford to get some hand sanitizer for the elderly that are volunteering on his behalf but lol

tinyrats

btw barrington is a largely centrist-conservative area that would have voted for biden. the fact that he’d put his own voter base at risk by demanding that people go outside to crowded polling locations (latino areas reported a two hour long fucking wait)–especially in light of the fact that an entire senior center back in dupage got quarantined yesterday after 22 elders got diagnosed with covid-19–absolutely fucking astonishes me. like it really fucking astonishes me. his older voter base is going to fucking die and their blood is on his hands
