One of the baristas at a nearby Starbucks makes me lose my mind every time I’m working there by saying things that are not outside the spectrum of normal human words but are just slightly off-the-wall.
Barista: Welcome to Starbucks, home of delicious, what deliciousness can I put in motion for you today?
Customer: … Can I get a trenta pink drink please?
Barista: Go big or go home, we here at Starbucks appreciate your commitment, what else can I get started for you?

Anyway she has a few dozen catchphrases she rotates appropriately and it’s both distracting and fantastic to listen.

Hey guys chicago essentially trapped protestors downtown by cutting off all public transit in the loop / downtown area and raising the bridges that allow cars and walk ways out of the loop (downtown is kinda like an island due to the Chicago River), then threatening people with arrest if they’re not gone by curfew (which was announced 30 minutes before it began - and when I left earlier it took 45 minutes to get out of downtown by foot due to the mayors closures.) it’s quite literally impossible. one bridge is open AFAIK but only to the north side. Cops murdered a black girl in Toronto this week too but Canadians are too up their own asses about how we’re “Not the racist ones! That’s only America! We’re the nice ones :)” to acknowledge it or do anything about it
Her name was Regis Korchinski-Paquet, she was a 29 year old Afro-Indigenous woman. She was pushed off of her own balcony by the Toronto police and fell to her death. They are reporting it as a suicide.
Say her name. Do not let them cover this up.

look im anticapitalist too but stop saying neurodevelopmental disorders (psychosis in particular) are only mental illnesses because they interfere with your ability to perform work under capitalism - while that’s true of a lot of mental “disorders” psychosis is a complex set of debilitating neurological issues which include hallucinations, delusions, disorganized speech etc. which negatively affect day-to-day life no matter what systems are in place. we can better support psychotic people, but communism isn’t automatically going to fix that particular response to trauma.
I think the only decent point that can be made about the relation of psychosis to capitalism is how difficult it is to deal with in a society where people are competitors and work comes before support—even in psychiatry. I have psychosis and have gone to ‘support’ programs that are actually focused on getting you to be a productive worker and fit in with capitalist expectations. This only worsened my paranoia, and it was held against me as usual, with no one trusting me to understand my own experiences. Capitalism didn’t create psychosis, it just made dealing with it worse and rejected us as lazy leeches for no ideal productivity, which is why so many homeless people are psychotic.
yes! this is an important distinction to make. capitalism definitely exacerbates psychotic symptoms and psychosis would be more manageable with a functioning community support network, but it would still exist.
