PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE DON’T SCROLL PAST THIS.

Scarleteen is a vital queer and trans positive sexual health resource. Their staff do an amazing job of creating really comprehensive and helpful articles on literally every sexual topic you can imagine. They also provide live chats, advice columns, moderated discussion forums, and SMS-based peer support. This site has helped me on countless occasions, and I refer at-risk queer and trans kids to this site every single day.

Scarleteen is invaluable.

And Scarleteen needs your help.

During their annual donation drive this year, the site was only able to raise $1,500. Only fifty people out of Scarleteen’s 350,000 unique monthly visitors contributed to the fundraising drive.

This means that unless Scarleteen sees a stable, sustained, 50% increase in donations, the site will essentially be forced to go dark on May 1. No more new content, no more advice columns, no more forums, no more live chat, no more SMS support.

This is devastating.

If Scarleteen goes dark, millions of young people, vulnerable queer and trans teens among them, will lose access to essential, fundamental sexual health resources. We cannot let this happen.

Please, please, please donate to Scarleteen. Consider making a recurring monthly contribution if you feel that this is within your means. Even $5 or $10 a month will go a long way to helping this very, very deserving organization.

And whether or not you’re able to donate at this time, please signal boost this and spread the word. Scarleteen does incredible, very necessary work, and they need our help.

Dude, Scarleteen saved my shit back in the day. They’ve been around since 1998 and I assure you, they deserve every single penny you can throw at them!

Three dog skulls from ‘Secrets of Bones’ hosted by Ben Garrod. The first image shows a regular dog skull; this contains both collagen, an organic compound, and calcium phosphate, a mineral compound.

In the images with the red gloves, another skull has been left in an oven for a few days. This has taken out all of the organic compounds, leaving just the mineral compounds. As you can see, this bone is too brittle to be of structural use.

In the images with the blue gloves, a skull has been soaked in formic acid for over a month. This removed the calcium phosphate from the bone but leaves the collagen. The surprising result is a very flexible skull.

Whaaaat. That is awesome.

Today I learned that Kamppi’s metro entrance (a popular meeting place) actually has an official title which is “Gekko”. It’s funny to me because during the ~8 years of it’s existence I’ve never heard anyone call it Gekko. Everyone calls it Kusari.

Kusari is a shortened form of kusi-iglu, which is Finnish for “piss igloo”

This is why I love my language

Trans* Housing Now -

Welcome to Queens Cottage Shelter!

Thank you for viewing our campaign. We are a small, grassroots organization that is working with the community to open the first Bay Area trans* women housing program - Queens Cottage Shelter.

When our founder, Breezy Golden-Farr, a transwoman herself, found herself homeless and without a place to lay her head, she came face to face with a real problem in our community. There is no safe and affordable housing for trans* women in the Bay Area.

Trans* people are often shunned and abused by the shelter system; they are often forced to sleep on the streets because they are abused and harassed by other shelter residents. Trans* women sorely lack a safe haven, where they can go for supportive housing. Queens Cottage Shelter will work with local partners to help empower residents reach for their goals of recovery, employment, school, and stable housing.

Miss Farr’s and others have been working tirelessly to open the first ever all transwoman housing program and Oakland. They have teamed up with Transitions House - a trans* housing advocacy group to make this dream a reality. We hope you will join us with passion we have for trans* affirming housing! This dream needs your passion and financial support.

How can I help?

Though our goal here is modest, it will allow us to start our fundraising for the following:

  • Help find a residence for Queens Cottage Shelter
  • Help us start and open our doors to 10 homeless trans women in need of your support.
  • Your support will provide short term housing to our community most impacted by violence and discrimination, TWOC and low income trans women.
  • Residents will be supported in the house to get connected to community resources including job search support by the Trans* Employment Program (TEEI), healthcare services, and case management.
  • It will mean trans* people have access to safe housing, showers, and free meals.

Perks:

Thank you for supporting this important and needed trans housing program. As our unique way of saying thank you for helping house trans* women of color and low income trans* folks, please check out our perks. Including buttons, t-shirts, and more! At certain donor levels, you even have the opportunity to sit down and meet these girls and hear their story. See first hand  what your financial assistance means to them. And remember, anything will help!

Thank You!

We are a registered with the IRS as a non-profit charity and we accept donations of all kinds. Any dollar amount, no matter how small, will be welcomed. Every dollar given is a dollar much appreciated!
