California is officially experiencing an epidemic previously thought eradicated
It’s official — California is experiencing a whooping cough crisis of “epidemic proportions.”
State authorities announced on Monday that there have been 3,458 cases cases of whooping cough (also known as pertussis) since the beginning of this year, with more than 800 new cases in the past two weeks alone. Usually, there are 80 to 100 cases per month.
i love how “lmao” has evolved over the years from a genuine expression of mirth to the modern symbol of wet, unemphatic amusement; the mere ghost of an emotion, reflecting the journey of modern youth from innocent naievete to hardened apathy. lmao
im also not here for the blatant deemphasizing of race in the creation and history of hip-hop. it’s frequently talked about as an art form that originated in the streets to speak out against oppression and address other societal issues. it’s conveniently glossed over that it originated in black (and latinx) streets to speak against oppression experienced by black people at the hands of white surpremacy.
It’s not some generic “fight the man” thing. It was created by lower-class black people to talk about our lives and what we experience. Any retelling of history that attempts to divorce hip-hop from it’s inherent blackness is racist.
