Quinoa may deliver a complete protein—all of the amino acids you require—in a compact package, but rice and beans together actually do better. And like goji berries, blueberries and strawberries are packed with phytochemicals. The only problem is that lacking an exotic back story, food marketers can’t wring as exorbitant a markup from these staples: The domestic blueberry, for example, is periodically (and justifiably) marketed as a superfood, and in 2012, products featuring blueberries as a primary ingredient saw their sales nearly quadruple. But they only raked in $3.5 million—less than 2 percent of açaí-based product sales.

Tom Philpott, “Are Quinoa, Chia Seeds, and other ‘Superfoods’ a Scam?” (from Mother Jones)

Also worth highlighting is this section:

“Worse than superfoods’ origin myths, though, are their effects on the people in their native regions. In 2009, at the height of the açaí berry hype, Bloomberg News reported that the fruit’s wholesale price had jumped 60-fold since the early 2000s, pricing the Amazonian villagers who rely on it out of the market. In the Andes, where quinoa has been cultivated since the time of the Incas, price spikes have turned a one-time staple into a luxury, and quinoa monocrops are crowding out the more sustainable traditional methods.” (emphasis mine)

So not only are the markets for “superfoods” putting the foods out of reach of the people who relied on them as a dietary staple, but there are foods easily accessible to us that deliver all the nutrition at a fraction of the cost, both to our grocery bill and to the social/environmental toll.

Actually, the main reason that anime took off in japan was because Japanese story writers wanted to do live action with European actors/set locations, and saw animation as an easier route to do so. Astro Boy is a great example of this; European characters with Japanese names/usage of the Japanese language. If an anime character looks white, they ARE white. Their name/language means nothing, it's an animation choice.

i kind of doubt thats true for all anime though? its also hard to say at anime character looks white when they’re all drawn pretty similarly, and from what ive noticed from modern anime if a character is white theyll not only have european features but they’ll have western names too, its……. pretty obvious

wait? just because they were drawn by a japanese person does not dictate the race of the character? they could very well be japanese, white, brown, whatever. it's open to interpretation i guess. btw wheres the link of the dark skinned kakashi? i wanna see it but i cant find it on your blog LOL

if you’re talking about kakashi

he exists in a universe that is very much asian or asian inspired at least (theyre NINJA, theres japanese text everywhere, come on) his name is japanese, for all intents and purposes hes asian

also im on my phone so i cant link you but it’s easy to find on my art blog

Is there a reason you draw white characters with dark skin? I think it's awesome I'm just wondering!

A lot of people have messaged me about the 30 Day Challenge list. I hadn’t realized the link on my old post was down, so I’m reposting it now, as well as letting you all know for the next 8 weeks I’ll be posting every Monday with animated illustrations. Hopefully I can brighten up your otherwise dry work week Monday!

UPDATE: Sorry I fixed the list. There was bunch of dummy text in there. It’s all good now

It happens whenever Beyonce performs or Rihanna steps outside. Its happened when Betty Davis wore hotpants and Left Eye wore condoms as eye patches. Whenever black women own their sense of sexuality and it appears to not be controlled by the hetero-male gaze, the whole world gets into a tizzy.

remember when they killed Brian on family guy and people got tattoos that said “rip brian” and then they brought him back like a week later. Remember when people got family guy tattoos. Those were the best days of my life
