I disagree abt the sexed diseases post, but mostly on the topic of "genitalia = gender," because some diseases (like genetic colorblindness and hemophilia) are carried on the X gene, and males (having only 1 as opposed to the 2 of a female) are an order of magnitude more likely to inherit such a condition since the presence of the gene by itself guarantees its assertion, while females would need two infected X genes from both parents to guarantee activation. & fr 99~% of the pop, gender = sex.

the way i’d say that would be that “what are your sex-determining chromosomes” is another influencing factor — much like all the other stuff, there are cases where someone’s got XY chromosomes with, say, androgen insensitivity, leading to someone who would under any other metric save genotyping be considered “female”. so yes, someone with XY sex chromosomes has a much larger chance of colorblindness, but that’s because they have XY sex chromosomes, not because they’re male.

i mean, you can pick any one of these traits and say that’s the thing that makes someone “really” male or female, but i guess my point in listing all these things is to say that there is no “predisposed to ___ on account of being biologically male/female”, because it’s not “male” or “female” as such, it’s one specific biological factor that is only usually correlated with perceived or assigned sex — there is no monolithic “biological sex”, there are just a whole lot of factors we lump together (“reify”) into two categories because of their correlation. that doesn’t make the categories “biological reality”, it just makes them statistically convenient.

Fedex Employee Refers to Package Recipient as “Ching Chong”

Sorry, nobody here by that name. Also, you ought to be fired.

Not this again. Got word passed along to me about a recent racist incident involving a FedEx employee… In northern Virginia, a FedEx employee left a doortag regarding a package delivery to the residence of an Asian customer. In the space denoting the recipient’s name, the delivery man wrote "Ching Chong Lee."

Oh, hell no.

Diana L., whose parents received the doortag, contacted customer service to inquire about the name on the package, and how exactly this happened. During the course of this attempted delivery, “Chang” somehow became “Ching Chong” — a familiar racial slur we all know and love. This was not somebody’s honest mistake.

GUYS PLEASE PAY ATTENTION TO HOW THEY ARE ATTACKING AND RAIDING MUSLIM HOMES IN AUSTRALIA

the police are attacking muslims in their homes in the middle of the night, arresting women in their beds, men in the morning, attacing and humiliating us all

life is getting scary here for the muslims

jurisdon

I didn’t believe this but here are some sources

Summary: Apparently they were trying to find local ISIS supporters and foil an alleged plot to carry out what PM Tony Abbot called “demonstration killings” to show that ISIS isn’t just located in the Middle East. They claim to have intelligence that informed this decision to raid. The raids were carried in 12 suburbs and involved around 900 police officers. They arrested 15 people during the raids, but have only released the details of one prisoner who had direct contact with the Australian Muslim who they know is an active recruiter for ISIS.

To me this sounds like an incredibly overblown response to an issue that could’ve been solved by one arrest. Please keep in mind that the Washington Post, the last source, is more conservative. Since these raids have happen, protests have erupted all over Australia and the Muslim Australian community is understandably fucking pissed. Don’t let this go unnoticed.

What's the best way for a poor person to avoid buying sweatshop stuff? I hate what happens in sweatshops but at the same time my options are limited due to money and what's being sold in my area :( Do you have any advice?

Thrift is the only thing i can think of

tranxious

Not buying from sweatshops would do nothing to improve the lives of the workers so it’s probably best to not waste energy on shopping “ethically” and concentrate on organising our own workplaces and communities.

bobsavage

Over the past decade, factory and sweatshop workers across East and South Asia have been militantly organising. Their unions are getting stronger, they are taking direct action against bosses and militias, and they are gaining better wages and working conditions all the time.

To boycott the products they make, when no union or sweatshop workers are calling for a boycott, doesn’t strengthen their struggle, it’ll weaken it.

Nike or Primark, whatever you buy you’re buying from exploited workers. And that includes the first world primark shop workers and delivery people. You cannot boycott capitalism under a globalised capitalist system.

eoin-ceallsach

Boycotts lead to less profits lead to already exploited workers being laid off. Unless they call for a boycott (in which they’ve hopefully prepared for the fallout) you’re only added more exploitation and starvation. It’s a fucking terrible tight-rope act that was purposefully designed to weaken solidarity and direct action.

It was a Muslim who realized that light ENTERS our eyes, unlike the Greeks who thought we EMITTED rays, and so invented a camera from this discovery.

It was a Muslim who first tried to FLY in 852, even though it is the Wright Brothers who have taken the credit.

It was a Muslim by the name of Jabir ibn Hayyan who was known as the founder of modern Chemistry. He transformed alchemy into chemistry. He invented: distillation, purification, oxidation, evaporation, and filtration. He also discovered sulfuric and nitric acid.

It is a Muslim, by the name of Al-Jazari who is known as the father of robotics.

It was a Muslim who was the architect for Henry V’s castle.

It was a Muslim who invented hollow needles to suck cataracts from eyes, a technique still used today.

It was a Muslim who actually discovered inoculation, not Jenner and Pasteur to treat cowpox. The West just brought it over from Turkey

It was Muslims who contributed much to mathematics like Algebra and Trigonometry, which was imported over to Europe 300 years later to Fibonnaci and the rest.

It was Muslims who discovered that the Earth was round 500 years before Galileo did.

The list goes on………..

Just imagine a world without Muslims. Now I think you probably meant, JUST IMAGINE A WORLD WITHOUT TERRORISTS. And then I would agree, the world would definitely be a better place without those pieces of filth. But to hold a whole group responsible for the actions of a few is ignorant and racist. No one would ever expect Christians or White people to be held responsible for the acts of Timothy McVeigh (Oklahoma bombing) or Andreas Brevik (Norway killing), or the gun man that shot Congresswoman Giffords in head, wounded 12 and killed 6 people, and rightly so because they had nothing to do with those incidents! Just like the rest of the 1.5 billion Muslims have nothing to do with this incident!

You know the funny thing is, it seems POC have contributed more to society and civilization than white people ever will. All they seem to do is erase the ethnicity and name and put their stamp on.

The discussion around Urbance reminds me of a discussion that was had around the time Save the Pearls came out

For those of you who don’t remember, Save the Pearls was a racist trainwreck of a YA novel written by a white woman. The plot revolved around a post-apocalyptic society where non-white people (particularly Black people) had systematic power over the small population of white people that had survived the apocalypse. These white people were called pearls, and apparently had to put on Blackface in order to exist in the world, blah blah blah. Abhorrent.

But surrounding the release/search for funding of this book (I honestly don’t remember which; I’m hoping the book had since been shamed back into the abyss of unpublished work) was a discussion about books that had set up the reversal of systematic racial power in a nuanced manner. Those books, which were written mostly by PoC, and particularly by Black women, explored that structure as a way to satirize white supremecy, and that point was carried across very concisely. Basically, they did everything Save the Pearls (retroactively) claimed and failed to do.

Now, putting aside the fact that Urbance a) Is recieving way more criticism from non-straight white people than Save the Pearls ever did, and b) only releasing a short synopsis that does not fully explain the power dynamics in the upcoming show…

The creators of Urbance seem dedicated to taking criticism and making this a thought-out piece. They have already explained that they want the show to explore racism, misogyny, transmisogyny, and other forms of transphobia. The main characters, as well as many of the side characters, are non-white. They have also suggested bringing in characters of varying gender identities. The way they are representing people of color and LGBTQIA+ identities tells me that this is not going to be another Save the Pearls, it’s going to fall in line with the more nuanced works written by (and with input from) the people marginalized in our present day reality.

And if the current plot is “problematic” (though let’s be honest, it’s probably not as “problematic” as your current favorite shows)? The creators have responded to the criticism thus far, and seem earnest in their offer to change and correct things.

tl;dr: I’m going to need white LGBTQIA+ to stop spreading misinformation/mass boycott information, to stop only popping up to criticize works written by/for/with PoC (and remaining silent while racist BS passes by), and to learn the difference between a gross trope and a nuanced analysis of power structures

HEADLINE: ANNOYING PALEFACEBAGOFPISS TAKES A PUBLIC SHIT ON VIETNAMESE CULTURE BY USING ANGEL HAIR PASTA IN HER “PHOE” WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY MOCKING “ASIAN” ACCENTS

allow me to share some precious gems from her recipe:

  • literally the only ingredients of the soup part are: 1. chicken broth 2. ginger and 3. garlic. THAT’S IT. like. she didn’t even use ANY spices??
  • - -??? how do you call this pho if you don’t use pho spices. they are essential. ESSENTIAL. that is what makes it taste and smell like pho. it is 100% necessary, 100% non-negotiable
  • "1/2 pound angel hair pasta" i’m too tired for this shit
  • basil leaves? you’ve gotta specify thai basil (or la hue) or your white audience is gonna go home and make fucking italian ass basily angel hair pasta spaghetti drowned in chicken broth
  • lime zest.. chill rachael
  • braised.pork.shoulder. in pho. shredded pork. in pho.

DON’T watch the video if you don’t want to end up throwing your computer in the trash. a selective summary:

  • repeatedly butchers the pronunciation of pho, calls it “phoe” at least 6 times, shamelessly
  • when she explains what the hot sauce is she puts on a mocking asian accent and says “SRIRACHAAA” WITH THAT BUCKTEETH FUCKING CHINAMAN THING PPL DO
  • "Trust me, if you’ve never tried it, it’s so easy to make a big beautiful bowl of PHOE. And it’d be so much fun for your kids or your friends. You can entertain with it. I like to put chopsticks in it and serve it with a slurpy soup spoon along side."
  • —no. it shouldn’t be easy unless you’ve been making it for a long time. it should NOT be easy if you’re someone that CANT EVEN PRONOUNCE THE NAME OF THE THING YOU’RE MAKING ON NATIONAL TELEVISION.
  • —even for my MOM, MY VIETNAMESE MOTHER BORN AND RAISED IN VIETNAM, it’s still a whole lot of work!!! i have been studying and practicing making it for years now and it still takes me DAYS to make. D A Y S
  • —“I like to put chopsticks in it” oh do you? that’s just your preference? weird coincidence. huh
  • —slurpy spoon
  • —“You can entertain with it” “it’d be so much fun for your kids or your friends.” LISTEN WHITEY. YOU DON’T JUST GO AROUND BRINGING HOME PARTS OF OTHER PPL’S CULTURES TO ENTERTAIN YOUR BRAT CHILDREN AND UGLYPALE FRIENDS WITH. OOOOO THE ORIENT. HOW FASCINATING. LOOK AT THIS WEIRD SHIT THOSE CHINKS EAT HAHAHA WOW SO WEIRD SO ORIENTAL
