Sarutobi Ayame:
A lot of people are mistaken about her but actually as a ninja and as an assassin Sarutobi-san is ultra top-notch. She becomes a dirty sow only in front of Sakata-kun. Probanly if it wasn’t for Sakata-kun she would have been perceived completely differently - 75p

Otose:
When things are sad and lonely she’s the good ol’ granny, but in short she’s an old hag. When everyone is in trouble she just makes her appearance and somehow resumes the narration. I can’t count how many times she has helped me out. This old hag is very important to me - 95p

Catherine:
To be honest she was planned out as a minor villain at first, but she somehow ended up being part of the Yorozuya family. She’s thick-skinned and unyielding, and sometimes she feels like the most Gintama-like or to say Gintama-belonging character out there - 85p

Terakado Tsuu:
When I was drawing her I was thinking that there’s no way there could exist such an offensive idol for real, but to think about it I guess I was wrong. I want Otsuu-chan to follow the idol path on the same level as them - 70p

Sakamoto Tatsuma:
Sakamoto-kun is someone who could be could be named the best and the worst, and since I felt that I couldn’t convey Sakamoto Ryoma’s appeal only by giving him physical strength I just put Mutsu-san in charge. My goal was to draw a whole, cool character not inspired by Dragon Quest’s parameters - 75p

Hattori Zenzo:
If it wasn’t for his hemorrhoids, Hattori-kun is actually supposed to be the Gintoki-kun level of strong, but is it my poor way of drawing to blame or the fact that he stinks of an ossan, he doesn’t seem to be very popular. He’s like a shadow anyway - 85p

Takasugi Shinsuke:
Before he was the kind of villain who’d use others for wrongdoings and only smile conspiratorially in the background, but now that he’s improved into the villain who takes part in wrongdoings himself, I’m happy. Let’s destroy the world keeping this pace - 75p

Okada Nizo:
Something that happens quite rarely in Gintama, Nizo-kun was someone to walk the path of evil until the very end. He carried out the original idea that was there for him - 90p

Kijima Matako:
Kijima-san who’s been head over heels for Takasugi-kun for 10 years but hasn’t had a single scene in which she’d actually have a conversation with him. Dreams come true if you don’t give up on them - 70p

Takechi Henpeita: 
The communication between him and Takasugi-kun that is happening on a regular basis is an enigma. I wonder who is the tsukkomi to his&Kijima-san’s boke, Takasugi-kun or rather Kawakami-kun - 80p

Matsudaira Katakuriko:
The real Matsudaira Katamori was said to be a handsome man without an equal, but this one was based off Robert De Niro. He’s rather a boss from detective dramas than a feudal lord - 85p

Sakata Gintoki:
Sakata-kun was initially planned out as a character with a laid-back attitude whose charm was in his motivation gap, but gradually he became a piece of trash with no motivation at all. I’ve been asked if I feel self-conscious or guilty about it for such a long time that I don’t listen to these sermons anymore. Please self-consciously continue being a shounen-manga protagonist for a little longer - 65p

Shimura Shinpachi:
At times Shimura-kun’s tsukkomi is so wordy it barely makes sense, at others it’s so overwhelming I’d draw entire pages of him executing his straight man duty. But if I relax a bit and ask for others to help out, he just disappears. I’m sorry - 55p

Kagura:
Being the heroine who keeps spewing but is still considered cute, Kagura-san just evolved into a spewroine, it becoming her landmark. In these 10 years she’s had a lot of growing to do, but I still sometimes tend to show her girliness. Most probably when Gintama’s over she’ll be the one to change the most if we keep warmly watching as she is growing up - 75p

Sadaharu:
Sadaharu-kun has taught me something important. It’s that characters with big bodies barely fit in a panel, so they end up getting smaller and smaller and appear more rarely. Like Daigoin Jaki from OtokoJuku’s principle isn’t it - 55p

Shimura Tae: 
At first her concept was similar to Kyoko-san from Mezon Ikkoku but apparently I’ve messed up somewhere and now we have what we have. If the girls from Gintama weren’t as sturdy as they are it would have been impossible to carry on, and now isn’t she that strength personified - 75p

Hasegawa Taizo:
Hasegawa-san represents the symbol of the samurai in the Gintama world. Well, he’s completely failed, but there certainly will come the day in which he restores his pride. When it happens, we can rest assured that this piece of work has come to its end - 85p

Hijikata Toshiro:
Hijikata-kun was supposed to be the cool Shinsengumi officer, but since he had to look after Okita-kun and Kondo-kun so much his concept started to tear apart, and then the Mayora and Tosshi happened and gradually he just became a boke. Honestly sometimes you’re so annoying, have some self-respect. If even you collapse the Shinsengumi will be just a flock of sickheads - 70p

Okita Sougo:
Since the inspiration came from the real Shinsengumi and Okita Souji seemed to be the kind of character who’d smoothly spit blood if needed, as a result he ended up spitting poison; he’s an incredibly black-hearted guy. But in Gintama’s case it’s not for the first time when a character’s whole life and personality were customized only in order to be able to spit out a gag - 75p

Kondo Isao:
Kondo-kun is essentially a dick jokes generator, but he’s actually a trustworthy guy and there’s more to him. I regret that I haven’t come out with more scenes that would show his appeal - 85p

Yamazaki Sagaru:
I don’t have anything to say.

Katsura Kotaro:
Everybody is fed up with your ‘Zura ja nai, Katsura da’, stop it already - 80p

Elizabeth:
Originally Elizabeth-kun was created as something to fit Katsura’s stubborness and be by his side, but now one can say that they’re equals and actually Katsura-kun is rather the bizarre creature in the duo. What a miracle - 80p

Yagyuu Kyubei:
Once the Yagyuu arc was finished I was thinking of making Kyuubei-kun the opposite of what she was, basically a pigtails-wearing fencing belle, but then I thought that were she able to become a girl this simply, that would invalidate her initial issues. So I added the ‘boku’ to the internal conflict and longing for a d*ck so as a result she’s not merely masculine or feminine but just her. You have a thorny way to go, but I will lend you a hand if needed - 70p

Tojo Ayumu:
Tojo-kun helped Kyuubei-kun get rid of the image of a villain, I know that. But I also know that there are too many dick jokes when it comes to him - 20p

Tokugawa Shigeshige:
He’s a gag-inducing character, and while this position supposes to soften stiff situation, his own ‘shogun’ position is the stiffest possible, so it was extremely easy to create comedic situation with him. But since his range is quite limited I couldn’t use him a lot - 85p

Okita Mitsuba:
The real-life Okita Souji had tuberculosis which made him quite miserable and unhappy so I felt that Gintama’s Okita-kun’s well-being was a little unfair, I gave that misfortunate fate to his sister. I feel the guilt - 100p

Tama:
There are quite a few characters with unbearable personalities in Gintama and since I’m often told that as an exception Tama-san is one gentle girl, I can’t wait to see whether she’ll manage to keep being like that as she is getting closer to being a human - 75p

Ito Kamotaro:
There were two people to cause trouble to the real Shinsengumi: Serizawa Kamo and Ito Kashitaro, so I mixed them together. Still, the character was based off Ito Kashitaro more - 70p

Kawakami Bansai:
He might seem cool at first but then you see him as a producer and read the songs he writes for Otsuu-chan and realise that the guy is sick. By the way, apart from Takasugi-kun everybody in Kiheitai is a clown. Takasugi-kun is the only one who keeps a serious face in that place, he is so cool - 75p

Tsukuyo:
I didn’t want Yoshiwara to be all about broken girls so I aimed to draw a cool woman who would fit there. Ended up drawing a hopeless virgin with the perfect body. Also it’s a pain to draw the mob hyakka characters’ clothings - 75p

Hosen:
Initially he was supposed to only be a lewd old man, but by the time Kamui-kun has made his appearance I decided to make the guy as strong as Umibozu. After all, strong old men are so appealing - 85p

Kamui:
I wanted him to be a calamity and a predator, as opposed to Kagura, but after a while I realised I was drawing Fullmetal Alchemist. I noticed only after. I swear it wasn’t plagiarism. Well, except from calamities and predators - 70p

Abuto:
I mentioned before that he was actually supposed to be killed off during the Yoshiwara arc, but gradually I changed my mind about killing him and just made him the character accompanying Kamui-kun. That’s why he little by little evolved from having a shit-face to having an actual human-like face - 80p
