what’s the deal with the posts i keep seeing that are like “mentally ill people CANNOT HELP being abusive please do not blame them for being abusive since they can’t control it uwu” like i am sympathetic to the idea that mental illness sometimes causes people to behave in hurtful ways but i don’t think that means other people are obligated to put up with it, particularly when those most likely to be targeted by that behavior are other mentally ill people

you may have seen some posts from me floating around Tumblr today, about how Andrew Hussie heavily referenced an old piece of art that I made with a friend, rukafais, for the latest update of Homestuck. The art in question is this, posted on DA in December 2010:

most of the posts going around either point out the inspiration, or are about my subsequent displeasure at the event. (I think there are more posts floating around than the ones I’ve linked, but those are ones that I feel are important!) the biggest beef that Ruka and I had about the event was that Hussie did not consult us at all, nor ask permission to involve our old work in the comic. I also took a bit of offense at the fact that this art was involved directly with Caliborn, a character who is often used to mock “shitty art” and poor design. Considering that the original drawing was made while I was a young teen, I feel like that’s a pretty big offense.

well, after a lot of hemming and hawing (and a horrible deluge of notes for me both on Tumblr and DA), Andrew has issued credit in the News section of MSPA:

he also explains his reasoning for this in this section, which I appreciated. I didn’t know where he was coming from before, so I’m glad I do now!

In addition, he also apologized to me (and partially to Ruka) on Twitter:

I was very glad to see this! I know that Hussie has been weird about this sort of thing in the past, but I’m glad that we were able to get a reaction from him by reaching out and raising awareness.

problem: a ton of people who used to read homestuck have lost interest for a number of reasons such as the comic’s decline in quality, the long hiatus, shifting opinions of hussie as a person, and even simply just because the comic has been going on for years and the readers’ tastes are changing as we grow up

hussie’s solution: come back from a year-long hiatus by making the worst character in homestuck be his normal unbearable self and repeat the same two jokes about him being A) a bad artist, B) a deviantart weeaboo, and C) a raging misogynist. for 30 pages. also ripping off and mocking a random piece of homestuck fanart from four years ago. because who wouldn’t love that am i right

it’s a photoshop of this picture she did for mariano vivanco and by reblogging that post you’re violating her just as much as the rest of the creeps threatening to release nude pictures of her
