this is literally CNN’s lede to a story about a boy who shot up his school and murdered two people.
before giving any details about the crime, about the victims, anything at all that might be relevant to people trying to learn more about this tragedy, CNN wants you to know that the shooter played football. that he was just named to the homecoming court.
this is the kind of respect accorded to non-black boys who commit murder. he literally shot two people, senselessly ended two lives, and the press is bending over backwards to paint a rosy picture of his background.
when an innocent, unarmed black boy is murdered, the headlines want us to know that he was “no angel.” that he made a backwards peace sign in a facebook profile picture. that he smoked marijuana once.
i don’t know if this boy who just murdered two people ever made hand gestures in his facebook profiles. i don’t know if he ever touched a joint. but i know that he played football. i know that he was recently named to the homecoming court.
