funny how not inciting violence causes peaceful protests to stay peaceful #Ferguson #MikeBrown
I like how officers just letting protest happen was apparently bizarre enough to make the fucking news

Have you ever been listening to Rainymood and thought, “Yeah, this is good … but it would be nice if I could customize the sound more, or if there was a little more choice.
Let me introduce you to MyNoise.
MyNoise is a customizable sounscape looper with so many options, even within each soundscape. So say, for instance, you really love rain sounds when you write or study or relax. Anything. I know I’m a big fan of rain sounds. They have a page for that.

But say you like really high, pattery rain, and LOTS of low thunder. Here’s where MyNoise really stands out: you can customize that. See those sliders with all the cute colors? That is your equalizer. You can adjust the levels based on what you want to hear more and less of. Here’s how it looks when you want high, pattery rain and low, rumbly thunder:

But say rain isn’t really your jam. Say you want something a little more ambient, a little more background noise-y. Something with people. Well, they have customizable coffee house chatter that even has the levels listed for things like “kitchen,” “babble,” and “table”:

Or say you miss the ocean.

Or say you miss your cat.

Or say you miss your spaceship.

Or say you miss the dungeon where you and your team of scalawag adventurers used to explore and face off against, say, dragons. In the dungeon.

This site is seriously so helpful, and those are just a fraction of every kind of sounscape the site has to offer. The best part is that if you want to layer it with music (for instance, I’ll layer a playlist + rain + coffee shop if the scene I’m writing takes place in a coffee shop), you can adjust the master volume, meaning all of your layers stay at their respective volumes, just louder or quieter.
Enjoy!

The French justice minister has been critical of US police violence after the Ferguson decision. She tweeted Bob Marley’s lyric “Kill them before they grow” referring to teenagers shot down by law enforcers.Justice Minister Christiane Taubira tweeted in French, saying “Michael Brown, racial profiling, social exclusion, territorial segregation, cultural marginalization, guns, fear, fatal cocktail!”
Then, she published a tweet in English.
How old was #Mickael Brown ? 18. #TrayvonMartin ? 17. #TamirRice? 12. How old next? 12 month? ‘Kill them before they grow’ Bob Marley ChT
Taubira later explained to France Info radio that she had expressed solidarity “in an extremely painful situation.”
“I am not making a value judgment on United States institutions [but] when the feeling of frustration is so strong, so deep, so lasting and massive, you have to ask yourself about the trust in these institutions,” said the minister.
“One realizes this only happens to the same people, African American kids. So there is the problem of a certain number of clichés, portrayals, prejudices which can create terrible reflexes,” she added.
French Government spokesman Stephane Le Foll said, referring to the situation, that “one shouldn’t comment about what’s going on in the US” as the country “has its own rules and procedures.”
He added that everyone should “turn their thumb 10 times” before tweeting, an expression in French that roughly means holding one’s tongue before speaking.
Taubira, who took office in 2012, also came under fire from political opponents over her comments.
The right-wing mayor of the city of Nice criticized Taubira for thinking it "appropriate to judge the American justice system" and said the fact that she remains the French justice minister made him "ashamed for my country."
Taubira has been the subject of prejudice and racism scandals for some time: earlier this year, ex-candidate for municipal elections, Anne-Sophie Leclere, known for her far-right leanings, received a nine-month prison sentence and a hefty fine after publishing a photo of Taubira with a monkey.
"I prefer to see her swinging in a tree than to see her in government," Leclere said.
Last year, the right-wing French magazine, Minute, published a cover story bearing the title “Taubira Finds Her Banana.”
What. The fuck
I’m honestly so thankful for tumblr at times like these bc these little articles and stories and anecdotes and snippets - are waking me the hell up and educating the fuh out of me.

People in Ferguson don’t have the luxury to ignore what’s happening right now. Black people don’t have the luxury to ignore the racism they’re forced to constantly face. I hope you realize how much privilege you have when you’re literally given the opportunity to ignore what’s happening.

they think they can do this quietly. they HOPE they can do this quietly. the energy is in the air & they are scared.
This happened in my town just a few days ago.
Her name was Aura Rosser, a woman who probably had a mental illness and was in the Ann Arbor area to try to get help.
Police responded to a domestic disturbance, she had a knife and one of the officers fatally shot her. That’s an important distinction. Cops are supposed to be trained in how to non-lethally subdue people.
She had three kids and was presumably trying to get her shit together. Why is she dead. How many times does this have to happen.
this is exactly what i’m thinking, too. the conversation among non-natives who are upset at the lack of accurate “poc representation” needs to be pushed a loooooot further than what it is, right now, because no matter what, any representation of tiger lily (accurate or not) is going to be seeped in the racist writing of native americans in peter pan. i honestly think the whole movie shouldn’t be made or it should be transformed in a way that has a humanizing portrayal of native americans, but knowing it’s hollywood, an institution built on dehumanizing non-white people, that’s not likely at all. it’s awful all around.
in case anyone (and i think a LOT of ppl aren’t yet aware) didn’t see the MASSIVE post i reblogged earlier this month, “bara” is actually more or less equivalent to a slur against gay men in japan, and NOT a cutesy term for buff men
so like, i’m not sure exactly how it became misconstrued as that over here but it’s probably best if ppl slowly weed it out of their vocabulary, because as white westerners (and esp. any white straight women) we really shouldn’t continue using a slur just because we understand it differently here
this isn’t a call-out either! i was using the term literally up until about a month ago when i read the post, and i’m a huge supporter of MASSIVE and the manga artists they promote so i just think, y’know, it merits a reminder

[Picture shows 19 year old woman, standing with use of a cane. She has a red “x” on her hand and is holding a purple pillow with statement taped to it, reading the following]
My name is Abby. I am a female, 19 year old, disabled college student and I stand with Emma Sulkowicz, but I have something to say to her that I truly hope she hears.
Emma Sulkowicz is a student at Columbia University who has been carrying around the mattress on which she was sexually assaulted as a performance art piece. Earlier today in her call to action for others around the country to carry their own mattresses in a show of support for victims and survivors of sexual assault, Emma asked that her supporters not carry pillows, stating that “pillows and ‘light’ and ‘fluffy.’” She stated that “sexual assault is neither a “light” nor “fluffy” matter, and we cannot treat it as if it were,” and suggested that by carrying pillows we are simply taking away from the number of hands to carry mattresses and instead said that people mark should themselves with a red “x” to show their willingness to help carry the weight.
But I cannot help carry a mattress. Carrying a mattress, even with a team of people, is not simply a difficult task for me, it is an impossible one. I have rheumatoid arthritis, and I walk with a cane. I am disabled. For me, even carrying a pillow is incredibly difficult, and I am far more privileged than many people with physical disability in that I can even carry that. If I were on crutches, in a wheelchair, or the use of my arms was more inhibited in any way, carrying anything would be out of the question.
According to Rape Response Services, almost 80% of people with disabilities are sexually assaulted on more than one occasion. Women with disabilities are at least twice as likely as the general population of women to be victims of sexual assault.
While I understand that Emma Sulkowicz wants to make an impact and retain the artistic integrity of her piece, disability is the often forgotten intersection in feminist activism, and I was disappointed to see her lack of consideration for those of us who cannot carry the physical weight, but are at a much greater risk to be forced to carry it emotionally.
We can’t all stand with Emma Sulkowicz.
Edit: This is a link to her original op-ed in which she presents her call to action: http://columbiaspectator.com/opinion/2014/10/26/call-carry-weight-together
This is a close friend of mine (In fact, we administrate a chronic illness/disability support group together) and I am so, so proud of her message. Please don’t leave disabled people out of your feminism.
