i swear to god if i see another person saying ‘if you think obesity is bad, you’re a fat shamer!!’
no
obesity is a real problem that causes lots of diseases
and just because i don’t like obesity, doesn’t mean i don’t like obese people
it’s like, i hate cancer, but i don’t hate people with cancer or shame people who have cancer
Is hating the volume of fat in someone’s body useful? Does it untangle the problems that come from obesity, like not being able to distract a doctor from your weight long enough to get treatment for any other issue, or the psychological impact of the constant shame and humiliation of being tut-tutted by strangers, or informed by packs of young men in cars of exactly how fat they think you are? Is the “obesity is bad” brigade making any kind of positive change? Do you think our culture doesn’t hate fat enough?
You hate obesity because you love fat people and want them to live rich, full lives, right?
So lobby for access to fresh food in low income areas. Lobby for schools to provide better education around cooking and meal planning. Lobby clothing companies to make clothes is sizes over 16. (How are you going to be more active if you have no clothes?) Protest the corn subsidy. Use your voice to speak against diets, which everyone knows don’t work. Lobby to shut down the “diet pills” and “miracle cures” snake oil industry. Fight for acceptance of people of all sizes so that those struggling with weight issues won’t feel compelled to hide themselves away in order to avoid coming into contact with your inspirational and totally not condescending hatred of their fat. Lobby for cancer aftercare support (since you also hate cancer), because cancer treatments eats your muscle tissue or ruin your joints, and sap you of your energy, turning many survivors into people who also have to cope with your hatred of their traumatized and suddenly fat bodies.
Fat is fucking complicated, okay? You hate obesity? Well, I hate your hatred, and your desire to advocate your hatred even though it hurts fat people. But I don’t hate you. Obviously!
