In fact, much of Europe’s success can be attributed to navigable water as well, but none are as crazy as the network of rivers that enter the Mississippi network, all of it under the control of one government. My point was just that many people are unaware of how influential river systems were/are in the development of nation states, and this map reminded me of it.
